Networking is becoming a part of our life as the computer technology is advancing with an unbearable speed. Of course, this situation causes our needs and demands to be more complex, or it doesn’t make our needs and demands more complex but harder to achieve, so the solutions are often more complex.
For example, we didn’t have to use network protection softwares in the past but now we have to do that to stay secure on the internet, however most of us can’t fully understand or use all of the features of such a software and it nearly requires the skills of a technician or something.
The same thing applies for building network platforms. There are different solutions available for different networking problems. However, they are not very applicable for every user despite every user might need such solitions for day to day usage.
Hamachi, is a tool which can create a virtual local area network. I mean, the computers in the network won’t be in a local area, but hamachi will maket hem available to each other like they are in a local area network (LAN).
This makes it possible to create different LAN groups from different locations, even from different countries. As you can guess, this feature can be used for many things. Now I will explain how it works:
After installing hamachi, you will be asked to join or create a network. You can assume it like a chat room. You can enter a network if you know the network ID and the password, or you can create a new one and ask others to join.
Once you are in the same network with people, you can notice that everyone has an IP adress starting with the number “5”. These IP addresses will be static unless your friends reformat their hard drive etc. I mean, this static IP is given to the users via a software attribute not hardware.
This static IP would be very useful for certain purposes. For example if you are playing a game via direct ip, you won’t have to check your friends’ real dynamic ip everytime you play. Whenever you get online on hamachi, you can be accessed via your static hamachi ip and only by the other members of the network you created or joined. I am not an expert on networking but I think even using one of the network members as a fileserver or something like that.
You can enable file sharing with the people in the same network as you. You can send and recieve files, you can map network drives from other computers from your operating system menus. In the other hand, you can disable or enable file sharing via hamachi, block users or send and recieve messages via the hamachi window.
The connectivity is a good thing especially if you are looking to play some games which require a local area network connection to play. The speed won’t be as high as a real local area connection due to physical reasons but technically, it will be possible to establish the connection.
One more good thing about Hamachi is, it is just an “Install & Use” software, there is no need to adjust anything or change any configuration in most of the cases. It will work with most firewalls on the market and you won’t have to deal with complicated stuff as long as your expectations are not complicated.
